Indigenous people in Central America use the natural resources according to their culture and values. Many of their territories are included in Biosphere Reserves, where maintenance or enhancement of ecosystem services is closely linked to the sustainable development practices of the local and indigenous communities. Traditional knowledge and management approaches is an innovative solution to the effective land management of these areas. UNESCO will continue sharing experiences and promoting dialogue for a better understanding of the status and priorities to integrate indigenous knowledge in the planning and management of natural and cultural sites in Central America. Pressure on natural resources is increasing, including indigenous people territories.
