The year 2002 marked ICARDA's 25th anniversary, and coincided with several honors and awards for the center's excellence in research. Research on developing high-yielding kabuli chickpea varieties that thrive in cool, wet winter conditions earned the 2002 King Baudouin Award of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), jointly with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), which focuses on desi chickpea.

Improved management of nitrogen (N) in low N soils is critical for increased land productivity and economic sustainability. We report results of a rainfed rotation experiment, conducted in the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP), Pakistan, during 1995-1999 to evaluate effects of residue retention and fertiliser N on N2 fixation inputs and yields of a mungbean (Vigna radiata)-wheat (Triticum aestivum) sequence, and a lentil (Lens culinaris)-summer cereal sequence. Mungbean and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) or maize (Zea mays) were grown in the summers and lentil and wheat in the winters.

World agriculture: towards 2015/2030 is FAO’s latest assessment of the long-term outlook for the world’s food supplies, nutrition and agriculture. It presents the projections and the main messages. The projections cover supply and demand for the major agricultural commodities and sectors, including fisheries and forestry. This analysis forms the basis for a more detailed examination of other factors, such as nutrition and undernourishment, and the implications for international trade.

This study investigates the political and contentious nature of access to mountain natural resources by poor, disadvantaged and marginalized people, including women and youth, and the policy processes associated with access and development over time. This study has been commissioned by FAO to look at sustainable livelihoods approaches to access to natural resources in mountain areas. We concentrate on access by poorer and marginalized groups to policy processes whereby long-term sustainable access to resources is achieved.
