Information on water use is required for political, economic and academic decision making on issues affecting everyone?s life. Owing to fi nancial constraints, it is diffi cult to have complete and comprehensive information on everything related to water. Techniques and methodologies are, therefore, used to affordably maximize control. To improve understanding of the different techniques and methodologies used to generate information, the AQUASTAT team sent thematic questionnaires to approximately 170 countries in April 2009.

IN response to an on-line survey, 76 project leaders and staff gave CPWF Phase 1 a

generally favorable review. Respondents came from 68 CPWF projects in 45 countries on

three continents. The survey sought to help learn what went well in Phase 1, what did not

go so well and can be improved in Phase 2.

Nearly three-quarters of respondents felt that they had achieved different research results,

outcomes and impacts as a result of participation in the CPWF than otherwise possible from

The research project “Integrating Governance and Modeling” used advanced modeling techniques to assist policy-makers and stakeholders in Ghana and in Chile to use water resources more effectively for agricultural development and poverty reduction. In Ghana, research was conducted in the White Volta Basin, which represents an early stage of river basin development. In Chile, the Maule basin was chosen as a case of advanced basin development. The two cases represent the Volta and the Andes benchmark basins of the Challenge Program on Water and Food.

In rural areas, land use and cover change is often the cumulative result of individual farmer decisions. The goal was to construct a spatial typology of farming systems and assess their influence on the extent and spatial distribution of deforestation, forest re-growth, and agriculture expansion in southern Chile between 1999 and 2007. We present a farm typology and its spatial rendering through the combination of farm-cadastral information and land cover and change data. Using multivariate statistical methods, four types were identified.

In the Región de Aysen, Chile, Nothofagus antarctica (ñirre or Antarctic beech) forms puré forests called shrubby beech forests and secondary mixed shrub of anthropogenic origin. The aim of this work is to characterize the insect fauna associated to the foliage of Antarctic beech forests and scrublands in the Baker river basin. Insects were collected in spring (October 2006) and summer (January 2007), in five beech forests and 10 scrub patches from latitudes 47°2' S - 72°48' W to 47°15' S - 73° W. Six orders of insects were identified, being Coleóptera the most diverse.

Soil erosion is a growing problem in Central Chile, particularly in coastal dry lands, where it can significantly decrease the productivity of rainfed agriculture and forestry. In this study, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS), and used to evaluate the effects of different combinations of vegetative cover on soil erosion rates for Santo Domingo County in Central Chile. Implementing RUSLE in the GIS required a complete description of the county’s soils, climate, topography and current land use/land cover.
