The purpose of this study is to discover the changes of household employment structure and of business range for those graziers who have to turn to rear sheep in pens as the background of the policy of returning farmland into forest and grassland. The results of this study are as follows: First, after turning to rear sheep in pens, though the graziers have saved time for other work, the time for feeding has increased to the whole year. In addition, the policy that encourages the rearing of sheep in pens has brought about a growing number of sheep graziers.

The recent increase in the number of tourists has raised serious concerns about grassland degradation by tourism activities in Inner Mongolia. Thus, we evaluated the effects of tourism activities on the vegetation and soil in Hulunbuir grassland. We identified all the plant species, measured the number and height of plants and plant coverage rate, calculated species diversity, and estimated above-ground biomass in the used plot and the non-use plot. We also examined soil hardness, and soil physical and chemical properties in both plots.

Grassland degradation has been caused by overgrazing in Inner Mongolia. Previous studies revealed the effect of grazing pressure on the vegetation and soil. However, that of different land use types (i.e., grazing and mowing) has not been fully understood, though land use has been dramatically changed from grazing to mowing after land contract system was introduced in 1996. The objective of this study, therefore, was to evaluate that effect on the vegetation and soil.

The environment is deteriorating on a long-term basis in the Ejina River Basin in Inner Mongolia, China as a result of a water shortage. The shortage was caused by increased water use by industries and agriculture after 1992 along the upper part of the Ejina River. In 2002, the Chinese National Water Resource Agency instituted a water sharing plan which resulted in more water being released downstream to a region including the Kyoen Delta. The repartition will have an effect on vegetation increase in the Kyoen Delta area.

Preceding studies demonstrate that there are two important prerequisites that facilitate land rental in agriculture; one is outmigration of farm labor, and the other is the securement of farmers' land rights. This is especially true for the counties and/or regions where the farm sector is overemployed and farmland has yet to be privatized. Considering these empirical findings quite tenable, this paper pays special attention to rural shareholding cooperatives (RSCs) that have been established recently in rural China.

The purpose of this study is to help build a clear picture of grazing in an agriculture region of China, to find out why farmers buy supplemental feed which is used in winter when their farmland is abandoned and covered by weeds. To meet this goal, I used the case of a village where farmers not only supplied but also bought supplemental feed to see how they used farmland. I discovered the following : The land fragmentation causes them to abandon arable field and borrow farmland from others by their relationship. So they don't have enough farmland to plant feed.
