Nineteen microsatellite markers were used to fingerprint a set of 19 potato landraces from the island of La Palma (Canary Islands). These landraces represent relicts of early introductions from South America, although most are commonly cultivated by local farmers. The SSR primers detected 62 polymorphisms, 13 of which were present in all landraces. Several accession- and group-specific markers were detected. Jaccard similarity coefficients were estimated from the molecular data and UPGMA cluster analysis was performed. Some cultivars with related common names clustered together.

A new species of land planarians of the genus Cratera is described. Cratera viridimaculata sp. n. was recorded in the Atlantic Forest Ecoregion, in north-eastern Argentina, and represents the first report of the genus Cratera outside Brazil. The new species is about 50 mm in length and externally characterized by a color pattern consisting of a light green olive pigmentation on the dorsum, stippled with dark gray fine spots, and dorsal eyes.

The presence of trees in the farms is typically considered a good practice in water shed  management. Therefore, it was examined the voluntary adoption of land uses considered more compatible with the water ecosystem service (shade coffee and woodland) in the region of Trifinio (located in Honduras and Guatemala), where there is not given any incentives or payment for this environmental service. It was observed low adoption of these land uses on small farms.

The productivity of different lettuce groups and roquette was evaluated when sown in two different periods and cultivated either singly or intercropped. Theses experiments were carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil. The first growing period was from May to August (Autumn-Winter) and the second from September to November (Spring) of 2001. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of the following factors levels: lettuce groups (crisp, cv. Vera; looseleaf, cv. Elisa; and crisphead lettuce, cv.

Crop classification within large agricultural regions is challenging owing to the presence of crops with similar phenological variation and intra-class variability. The development of efficient and simple classification methods is needed for more accurate mapping, monitoring, and analysis of land-use categories.

Acid sulfated soils are characterized by high amounts of iron and sulfur, which in presence of air are oxidized and form sulfuric horizons extremely acidic, generating environmental changes ranging from water pollution to problems associated with fertility and crop production, among others. This research was conducted in order to identify suitable plant species to control the acidity of these soils in the town of Paipa, Boyacá, Colombia. A completely randomized experimental design with 6 treatments and 3 replications was implemented in potting shed; there, the response of Beta vulgaris L.

For over a decade, the globalisation of environmental, economic and social issues has induced rapid modification in agriculture and land. These changes raise the question of future extensive livestock systems in regards to the worldwide challenge to double livestock production by 2050 in ways which are safe for the environment. In order to better understand and follow modification processes, a comparative study of livestock systems and land dynamics has been carried out on seven case studies on three continents through the use of a common grid.

The major citrus production of the world are located between 20-40 degrees north and south latitude. In these conditions the mandarins get the best internal and external qualities.‘Arrayana’ is the main mandarin cultivated in Colombia tropical lowlands (around 04° N). This variety is characterized by a high concentration of the harvest in december and january because it has only one principal bloom in the year (two weeks after onset of rainy season); and an average external quality that prevents it from being highly competitive.
