    This report presents the results of a mixed-methods study on the role of customary land documentation in strengthening Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE). The overarching purpose was to help fill critical knowledge gaps on if and how strengthening women’s land rights via formalized customary land documentation affects their empowerment and economic growth, with a specific focus on women’s access to credit and other financial services, land investments and income opportunities.

    For rural women and men, land is often the most important household asset for supporting agricultural production and providing food security and nutrition. Evidence shows that secure land tenure is strongly associated with higher levels of investment and productivity in agriculture – and therefore with higher incomes and greater economic wellbeing. Secure land rights for women are often correlated with better outcomes for them and their families, including greater bargaining power at household and community levels, better child nutrition and lower levels of gender-based violence.

    Agricultural and Livestock Policy nine general objectives are: Assure basic food security for the nation, and to improve national standards of nutrition by increasing output, quality and availability of food commodities.     This Notice contains in its Schedules declared customary law on guardianship, inheritance and wills. As to guardianship of women and children, certain powers and restrictions are placed un guardians regarding agricultural crops and livestock. A guardian is forbidden from selling land or permanent crops which are under his protection. As for inheritance, women are allowed to inherit except clan land. They can use clan land without selling it during their lifetime. But if there are no men in that clan, a woman can inherit this land completely.
