Liberia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) is built on the foundation of the Government’s 150-Day Action Plan. The PRS is part of a longer-term continuum of the Government’s strategy for rapid, inclusive and sustainable growth and poverty reduction, including progress toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The PRS covers the three-year period from April 2008 to June 2011.

To promote gender equitable, socio-economic development and improve national capacities for enhanced gender mainstreaming in the national development processes, the Government of Liberia adopted in 2009 the National Gender Policy as an instrument to break with the past and moving on with sustainable development for both women and men and to eliminate all forms of gender based discrimination. The NGP also provides a mechanism for accountability within the Government itself and for other stakeholders, in eliminating all forms of gender based discrimination.

The discussion took place in collaboration with the Rights & Rice Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and the Land Rights Now campaign.

Though women play a central role in agricultural production in Liberia, women’s rights and access to land are often not equal to those of men due to biases in the formal legal framework and customary law.
