The Gambia has one of the fastest urbanization rates in sub-Saharan Africa, with more than two-thirds of the country’s population currently living in the Greater Banjul Area (GBA).
To address the environmental and socioeconomic challenges that arise from this situation, UNOPS is supporting The Gambia’s government to develop a strategic urban plan, through the Greater Banjul 2040 project. This commentary highlights the importance of land tenure security for women and indigenous peoples. Land titles are often used as a proxy for women’s land security;but focusing on titling alone does not lead to greater tenure security for women. To ensure tenure security;the development community;policymakers and practitioners must expand the range of interventions that address constraints women face when exercising their land rights.

This document presents results from the 8 April 2020 on-line conference on the impact of COVID-19 on small-scale farming;food security and sovereignty in the East African Community. There were 53 participants from 16 countries. The conference strongly acknowledged the contribution of small-scale farmers towards feeding the population during the time of COVID-19. Governments have tightened borders and restricted gatherings;but small-scale farmers often operate in groups. There is a lot of fear and uncertainty and most are staying away from their gardens in the planting season.

Achieving tenure security, land and property rights in informal urban settlements remains one of the most persistent, intractable development challenges today. The Secure Tenure in African Cities: Micro Funds for Community Innovation initiative launched by Cities Alliance aimed to address this challenge.
The dynamics of current global challenges—like food and nutrition security, environmental degradation, climate change, and emergencies—reduce the availability of and/or access to natural resources, and thereby underline the urgency of achieving transformational changes in the governance of tenure. This is increasingly required to bring the greatest good to the most people, in line with human rights.
