Les terres de pâturage et de parcours soutiennent l’économie nationale et la vie de 95% de la population du Niger concernée par l’élevage. Sur le terrain, les politiques et investissements semblent donner plus d’attention aux terres de culture qu’aux terres de pâturage. Ainsi, entre 1975 et 2013, le Niger a enregistré une régression des terres de pâturage de 15% associée à une augmentation des terres de culture de 94%.

The support plan for the Sahel is a regional approach to collectively address the root causes of disruptions such as poverty, migration and youth unemployment, climate change, insecurity, governance and institutional issues in the region. In this report an overview of the current situation for each of the priority areas of the UN Support Plan is presented to demonstrate that the full implementation of the plan could utilize an existing momentum of development not seen in decades in the Sahel.

Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) could enable some of the poorest forest communities to be paid to conserve and protect their forest resources by companies seeking to offset carbon emissions. This project examines the REDD mechanism from a pro-poor perspective, particularly from the standpoint of local communities, and assesses knowledge gaps among community residents and leaders about carbon trading to avoid deforestation – do they understand and appreciate the rules as they have been developed through a distant global discourse?

The study focuses on impacts of PZ Wilmar’s acquisition of nearly 30,000 hectares of land. Wilmar is a multinational company involved in land grabbing cases related to oil palm plantations in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study shows the extent of Wilmar’s infringement on communal land rights, examining cases of eviction and destruction of livelihoods. Findings show that the four communities studied suffered from increasing food prices, deficits of local staple foods, evictions and displacement of poor farmers.

These Regulations reform the law in Ghana with respect to the granting of timber rights and related matters. They (a) regulate the identification of land suitable for the grant of timber rights, (b) regulate the terms and conditions for small and large scale timber rights, (c) regulate other sources of timber, and (d) provide for a legality licensing scheme.The Forestry Commission shall identify lands suitable for grant of large scale timber utilisation contracts. The Regulations set out the procedures for the identification of lands (including owner consent).
