Ethiopia’s rapidly growing urban centers are facing an unprecedented level of demand for urban land
and housing. How can Ethiopia supply urban land in an efficient and equitable fashion to accommodate
growing demand from industries and individuals for diverse uses? How can existing residents and
incoming migrants afford adequate shelter to survive and thrive in fast growing cities? The Ethiopia
Urban Land Supply and Affordable Housing Study aims to provide practical solutions to these
    questions.

The contemporary urbanization and its implication to land use dynamics especially in the peri-urban areas are emerging as a cross-cutting theme in policy debates and scientific discourse. As most cities in developing countries, including Ethiopia, are experiencing continuous expansion of built-ups and dynamic land use changes, monitoring and an in-depth analysis of the past, present and future predictions of these changes are important for a holistic understanding of the problem, its consequence, and to regulate proper land use intervention options.

This study reviewed the status of natural resources and the driving forces for change, as well as past and ongoing approaches in natural resource management at the watershed scale in Ethiopia. First, we reviewed established environmental policy tools and the legal and policy framework, and determined whether innovative financing mechanisms are working in other areas with a similar context. We undertook stakeholder analyses and mapping to identify key stakeholders, and to assess their possible roles in the implementation of a sustainable financing mechanism for watershed rehabilitation.

While modern food distribution systems are evolving in many cities, more traditional and often informal forms of food supply continue to be vitally important in the towns and cities of developing countries and countries in transition. They are important because they can best cater to the specific needs of poor urban households. They also provide employment and income to low income households, and supply food products and services that are tailored to the particular needs of urban consumers.
