Despite their ecological, economic and social importance, Mediterranean grasslands continue to receive limited scientific, political and media attention. Grasslands are typically viewed as underutilized space, able to be transformed into more “valuable” land by placing it under cultivation, transforming it into forest land and/or privatizing it. This paper synthesizes a number of pertinent issues in relation to social and economic systems on grasslands within the southern Mediterranean region.

Africa is basically an agrarian state, with over 65 percent of its populace engaged in one form of farming or animal husbandry. Predominately, Africa’s agriculture is human-labour dependent, with near absence of mechanization in most production practices as well as being rural based. In most rural areas cropping is basically achieved through the use of simple tools such as hoes and cutlasses. Rural set-ups in most African states often lack basic amenities for comfortable life, with resultant effect on human migration from rural areas to urban centers.

Stochastic frontier analysis was used to examine input demand elasticities and determinants of technical inefficiency of rainfed farmers in Nigeria. Allocative efficiency of the factor inputs was computed using the marginal value product. Our results show that herbicide has the highest elasticities. It is followed by seeds, fertilizers and land. Labour has the least contribution to the output. None of the respondents optimally allocated the inputs. A large number of the farmers underutilized the variables land, seeds, fertilizer and herbicide, whereas numerous farmers over-utilized labour.

This paper examines the productivity of hired and family labour and the determinants of the technical efficiency of fish farms in Ghana. A modified Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function which accounts for zero usage of family and hired labour is employed on cross-sectional data of 150 farmers collected in 2007. The results reveal that family labour, hired labour, feed, seed, land, other costs and extension visit have a reasserting influence on fish farm production.

states and England where the land belonged to the state (to the Crown in the case of England), the land
was private since in the middle age, in all other countries. In this context, the ownership right on private
property was not known in Albania until the 90’. This article aims to provide the legal framework of land use for

Rural households are displaced from their lands without any plan in place to resettle or compensate them, for a promise of improvement in their living standards.
