This study by GTZ on behalf of BMZ about FDI in land has identified numerous problems that the Malian Government needs to tackle. Since 2007 foreign direct investments (FDI) in land have dramatically increased. Situated in West Africa, the Republic of Mali
covers an area of 1,241,238 km2. Of this in 2002, 35.2 % was designated arable land and 11.6 % was cultivated land. To date, FDI covers 130,105 ha of land. The study formulates recommendations to ensure that local communities derive the best possible benefits from FDI.

This International Women and Mining Network - RIMM's publication is one step towards building an awareness of the challenges and struggles experienced by women in particular places where companies are extracting wealth from the depths of the earth. The perspectives of these outspoken women on mining are rarely heard in international media, court rooms, parliamentary legislatures, or international policy development forums.

Challenge Program Water and Food: Basin Focal Project NIGER

Faced with increasing food and water insecurity as a result of climatic and

anthropogenic (demography, land use) changes, the CGIAR Challenge Program

for Water and Food commissioned research in 10 river basins to study the links

between water, food and poverty. Looking at the Niger river basin, we carry out

a diagnosis of the hydrologic and agronomic potential, before attempting to

identify how good agricultural water management may reduce vulnerability in the

The Basin Focal Project Volta (BFP Volta) was developed along three main steps:

Assessment of present conditions of the distribution of rural poverty, of farming

    systems with their productivity and water productivity;

Analysis of opportunities and risks, especially under the double pressure of demography

and possible climate change, and modeling of water resources to identify sensitivity of

water allocation to development and climate scenarios; and

Identification of research gaps and implementation plan.

The West African drought has now been lasting for more than 30 years. It has tragic consequences in the Sahel countries, such as desertification. This drought, which is notably characterized by a decrease of rainfall, global surface-water flows and by a change in the rainy season characteristics, contributes to reduce the water availability in the Niger River Basin. This climate shift must be born in mind if one wants to understand the present hydrology and water uses in the basin.

Through its innovative operations, and its facilitation of dynamic

communities of researchers, development experts, policy makers,

producers and consumers, this CGIAR Challenge Program goes

beyond research for development as usually practiced.

Yet, paradoxically for a program well-versed in technical and

social complexity, the CPWF approach is simple: to effectively

address a shared problem, we must first work together.
