This paper provides new evidence on the caste-related land productivity differential and its explanations in rural Nepal using household plot panel data. Low-caste households are found to have significantly higher land productivity on their owner-operated plots as compared to high-caste households. A comparison between the rented in land of low-caste and the owneroperated land of high-caste households showed that the former has significantly higher land productivity. No significant Marshallian inefficiency was found in the case of low-caste tenant households.

This plan proposes to compensate project-affected persons (PAP) according to the land tenure rights they hold. It pays PAPs who are legal users with permanent rights to use the affected land, replacement costs for acquired land, crops and forest produce, and productive trees. Legal users with temporary rights will receive the same compensation described and also be allowed to opt for either cash assistance for affected land corresponding to 30 percent of the replacement costs of affected land or cash assistance for lost income from affected land.

Although opinions on impacts of land market transfers are sharply divided, few studies explore the welfare and productivity effects of land markets on a larger scale. This paper uses a large Indian panel spanning almost 20 years, together with a climatic shock (rainfall) indicator, to assess the productivity and equity effects of market-mediated land transfers (sale and purchase) compared with non-market ones (inheritance). The analysis shows that frequent shocks increase land market activity, an effect that is mitigated by the presence of safety nets and banks.

Plantation Development in Attapeu Province, Southern Laos
Informes e investigacionesEnero, 2010LaosThis paper seeks to add to the growing literature on land concessions by examining a recent, high-level concession as a means of understanding three aspects related to concessionary investments: (1) the process by which concessions are awarded and implemented; (2) the intricate relationship between land use, land tenure, and land ownership in the face of concessions; and (3) the way in which village and household livelihoods are impacted due to such massive land use and ownership changes.

Primitive accumulation and the arrival of large-scale economic land concessions in Laos
Artículos de revistas y librosEnero, 2011LaosABSTRACT: In recent years the government of Laos has provided many foreign investors with large-scale economic land concessions to develop plantations. These concessions have resulted in significant alterations of landscapes and ecological processes, greatly reduced local access to resources through enclosing common areas, and have ultimately led to massive changes in the livelihoods of large numbers of mainly indigenous peoples living near these concessions.

A two-pronged agricultural land reform was devised in Georgia to move toward a market- oriented economy, one prong being the distribution of land parcels of up to 1.25 hectares in ownership to rural families (the “small parcel” approach), and the second being the leasing of the remaining state-owned land in larger allotments to physical and legal entities. The land reform program was intended to create a self-maintaining sector of subsistence-oriented small farmers and a market-oriented sector controlled by larger leaseholders.
