The position paper provides an updated insight on the role that urban agriculture can play in pursuing the Millennium Development Goals and more specifically MDG 1 and 7, related to poverty reduction, food security, and environmental sustainability. It intends to raise awareness and inform decision makers and planners of the different aspects of urban agriculture, which entails a broad range of activities, related to the food production and distribution chain, within natural resources planning and use including urban and peri-urban forestry.

Based partly on the documents produced by the forest tenure assessment and partly on experiences described in the wider literature, the publication then reviews specific experiences of forest tenure and tenure reform, drawing lessons about what has worked and why, and identifying potential risks associated with particular approaches.

The VGs are still under-negotiations under the auspices of the Committee of World Food Security, and are therefore still subject to change.

The case of Slovakia

Structure of agricultural land ownership in Slovakia is likewise as also in other EU states different from structure of agricultural land use. In administration of the Slovak Land Fund it is still at present (2005) app. 25% of agricultural land. The agricultural land market is marked with previous period and it is up to now poor developed. The reasons are economic as well as legal one.
