The present Act sets out a series of measures which are designed to respect the acquisition of farmland by non-residents. It contains at the outset a definition clause relating to various terms therein employed such as "acquisition", "agriculture", "public road", "commission", "lot", "farm land". Thereafter the text deals with territorial application, control of the acquisition of farm land, application for registration of the acquisition, penalties and general provisions.

The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make Regulations for the purpose of prohibiting, annulling or in any manner restricting the taking or acquisition directly or indirectly of, or the succession to, any interest in controlled land (as defined), provided that they do not operate so as to prohibit, annul or in any manner restrict the ownership by a person of interests in controlled land consisting of not more than 2 parcels containing, in the aggregate, not more than 20 acres.

The Act provides the term "first nation" meaning an Indian Act band named in a schedule. Additional First Nations may request the Governor-in-Council to have the Act applied to them.

Under section 4, no ineligible person or foreign controlled corporation shall take or acquire, directly or indirectly, an interest in controlled land – which is land in Alberta but does not include (a)land of the Crown in right of Alberta, (b) land within the boundaries of a city, town, new town, village or summer village, and (c) mines and minerals. The Regulation further specifies which are the percentage of foreign ownership that are allowed (sect. 13).
