This document provides an overview of the status of forest resources in Asia and the Pacific and their sustainable management through national forest programmes in 30 countries in the region, including new country profiles for Brunei Darussalam, Maldives and the United States of America. The update is based on information derived from a variety of sources, including country reports to the eighteenth Asia Pacific Forestry Commission meeting in Australia in May 2000. Major changes have emerged in forests and forestry policies in recent years.

The outlook paper for Lao PDR reviews the state of the forestry sector and draws attention to the need for political commitment to the forestry strategy 2020 to bring the forests in the country under sustainable management and provide a firm basis for rural development. Without significant policy support, forest and forestry in Lao PDR will continue to be overwhelmingly influenced by the regional resource economy during the next decade.

Light textured sandy soils are ubiquitous throughout the tropics and constitute an important soil resource on which millions are dependent for their livelihoods. Spanning a range of rainfall regimes from the arid to the humid tropics, they present unique sustainability and environmental challenges to resource managers. Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of sandy soils often act as a severe limitation in crop production.

Volume I of the proceedings on the above theme, which was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 11 to 14 February 2003. The three primary objectives of the symposium were to provide a forum (i) to review and synthesize the latest information on large rivers; (ii) to raise the political, public and scientific awareness of the importance of river systems, the living aquatic resources they support and the people that depend on them; and (iii) to contribute to better management, conservation and restoration of the living aquatic resources of large rivers.
