Agriculture in Ethiopia remains to be the key sector. It is still the main source of foreign exchange earnings (up to 90%) and the largest labour force employer (about 83%). Of the total agricultural output, about 95% was covered by smallholder agriculture sub-sector. However, a number of factors limit smallholder farmers from participating in export potential cash crops. The main objective of this paper is to identify household specific factors determining sesame production and marketing participation.

Low water use efficiency is a challenge to crop production in Sub-Sahara African countries. Water is getting continuously scarce due to increased demand and shrinking availability induced mainly by climate change. As agriculture is the major consumer of water, improving crop water productivity is among the ways of overcoming the challenge. Crop production under rainfed system is the major livelihood strategy for smallholder farmers in Ethiopia.

This study was conducted at Ginchi watershed in Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia to evaluate the
physical, chemical and microbiological quality of livestock drinking waters during dry, short rain and wet
seasons. Purposive sampling technique was used to obtain samples. Data were collected and analyzed using
descriptive statistics. The analysis showed that the overall mean concentrations (mg/l) were 298.33 TDS, 8.0

A major problem being faced by human society is the rising of global temperature mainly due to human activity that emit carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The problem of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide can be addressed in a number of ways. One of such actions is forestry development and forest management undertakings. Sustainable forest management and development is believed to be an asset for increasing societal adaptive capacity to climate anomalies.

This report contains information on a rapid field assessment of Boran pastoralists of southern
Ethiopia to: (1) gauge local communities’ perceptions of the need for local climate change
adaptation strategies and their degree of satisfaction with existing interventions; (2) identify
emerging climate risk adaptation strategies; and (3) evaluate how existing and new strategies
including efforts by non-governmental organizations and the Ethiopian government might
complement or be compromised by index-based livestock insurance (IBLI).

This study conducted in two sub catchments of the Abay Basin identified the quantity and quality of sediment loss and its origin though most studies conducted in Ethiopia focus on quantification of soil loss. Also, the onsite economic cost in terms of yield reduction was estimated taking maize (Zea mays) as representative crop. For this purpose, two monitoring stations were selected at the outlet of the two watersheds. Depth integrated runoff samples were collected during the rainy season in 2011 while discharge of the Rivers was estimated from staff gauge-discharge relationship.

In Ethiopia, soil erosion during the rainy season constitutes a sever threat to the national economy. The study site, head of the Abay basin is among the heavily affected areas, which is a peril for the crop water productivity. Most studies conducted in the country are focused on quantification of sediment and lack of specific information about temporal and spatial variability of sediment and its associated plant nutrients loss.

Communication and knowledge sharing among stakeholders working in rainwater management has a paramount importance to create shared understanding and to narrow the gap between research and action. Even though various rainwater management initiatives have been undertaken in Ethiopia in the last thirty years, there has been limited opportunity to share experience, to take valuable lessons and avoid duplication of efforts. This paper attempted to describe NBDC stakeholders’ understanding on concepts and practices of RWM.
