    As a program designed for bridging research to development outcome, the CPWF considers regular reflection, learning and adaptive management as crucial elements in the implementation of the basin programs. Reflection implies that the project teams and key stakeholders take stock of what is going on in the project in terms of the science and the process and revisit basic assumptions that underpinned their research. Such reflection provides opportunities for the learning which directs adaptive management.

    This paper reports on a four-site study conducted in the Sahelian zone of Niger. The study takes a novel mixed methods approach for understanding conflict management from the perspective of rural peoples by not only describing past highly publicized conflicts but also by analyzing the steps rural peoples follow to management disagreements that arise in their everyday lives. This “bottom-up” approach reveals both a capacity and preference among our informants to manage disagreements informally without involving village or extra-village authorities.

    The Challenge Program on Water and Food in the Volta basin aims “to strengthen integrated management of rainwater and small reservoirs so that they can be used equitably for multiple uses.” One way by which to accomplish this is to increase crop and livestock productivity through Rainwater Management Strategies (RMS) and improve water productivity at the farm level.

    This study of the evolution of AWM in the Volta Basin yielded key recommendations for research-for-development interventions and new concepts for research on water management. When promoting AWM strategies, projects should carefully study the available information on factors triggering adoption,

    Fortified excreta pellets for agriculture

    This paper describes the pelletization process of fecal sludge-based fertilizers. The equipment used for the process was fabricated locally in Ghana. Each fertilizer product was individually used for the production of cylindrical pellets. From the current study, the binding material type (cassava starch, either pregelatinized or pretreated by gamma irradiation, or kaolin clay) and concentration (0 to 10 % in mass) as well as moisture content (20-47%) appeared to be the most critical factors during pellets production.
