Considers the cultural dimension of applying the land information system (LIS) concept to lands held under customary land tenure. The article recognizes that the LIS concept has been developed primarily to serve the needs of countries with a western-style land market where individual land rights are the norm. However, many countries where customary landholdings exist, or predominate, are also interested in establishing LISs to manage their land resources better. The article has three main sections.

A Decree to amend the Native Lands Act.
RegulacionesFiji, OceaníaThis Decree amends the Native Lands Act by replacing in the Act and all subsidiary legislation made under the Act the word "native" with the word "i Taukei". It also inserts a new section (1A), which provides that all written laws (of Fiji) are to be changed by deleting all references to "native" and inserting therefor the word "i Taukei".

An Act to Provide for a Land Commission in Rotuma, the registration and dealing with and transmission of land and matters incidental thereto.
LegislaciónFiji, OceaníaThis Act provides for various aspects relative to dealings in land in Rotuma and provides for the appointment of the Rotuma Lands Commission. The Commission shall ascertain (traditional) land rights, resolve disputes relative to land rights, demarcate land and register land rights (sect. 4). All land found by the Commission to be un-owned shall vest in the Crown in trust for the Rotuman people, but shall not be considered to be Crown land. All moneys derived from such un-owned land shall be paid into the Rotuman Development Fund and be used for the purposes of that Fund.

An Act to alter the Native Land Trust Act.
LegislaciónFiji, OceaníaSection 4 of the principal Act is amended in subsection (1) by adding "or for the benefit of the native Fijians". Section 19a concerns allotment of extinct mataqali lands. A copy of the Order by the Board under section 19(1) allotting or otherwise dealing with land vested in the Board under that section must be sent by the Board to the Native Land Commission which must register the allotment or dealing in the Register of Native Lands kept by the Commission.

Lands marked out and defined under subsection (1) of section 19 must be: (a) declared by the Minister by Notice in the Gazette to be vacant lands under the control of the Board; and (b) dealt with in all respects as native lands. Income arising from vacant lands vested in the Board under this section, must be paid to the Central Fijian Treasury and used exclusively for the benefit of Fijians in a manner and for purposes approved by the Minister on the advice of the Great Council of Chiefs.
