    Over the past several years, commitments and pledges on ‘no deforestation, no peat, no exploitation’ (NDPE) have been made throughout the Indonesian palm oil sector, primarily in response to pressure from NGOs and the public. The NDPE pledges aimed to transform an industry with social and environmental challenges into one that works for people, nature and business.

    The deforestation-free movement (or “zero-deforestation”) has emerged recently in a context of lower state control, globalization and pressure on corporations by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) through consumer awareness campaigns, acknowledging the essential role of agricultural commodities in deforestation. It takes the form of commitments by corporations to ensure that the products they either produce, process, trade or retail are not linked to forest conversion.

    Post-tsunami reconstruction has been under way in the Indonesian province of Aceh for nearly two years. In the authors' view, swift coordination of goals and instruments has enabled positive synergies to be created between short-term development-oriented emergency aid and long-term recovery. In this way, and by means of a conflict-sensitive approach, the aim is to guarantee the sustainability of the reconstruction effort.

    The Act establishes that the right to administer soil, water and air is vested in the State. The State, therefore, has the authority to: (a) regulate the allotment, use, supply and maintenance of soil, water and air; (b) regulate the legal relations between persons and soil, water and air; (c) regulate the legal relations between persons and legal acts concerning soil, water and air. The exploitation of these resources both by individuals or corporate bodies is to be performed within the objective of the national interest and by guaranteeing the protection of economically-weak groups.

    This Law amends Law No. 27/2007 on the Management of Coastal Area and Isles. Amendments deal with several articles specifying administrative and legal proceedings for managing coastal areas and small islands meeting environmental requirements for the following purposes: conservation, education and training, research and development, mariculture, tourism, environmentally friendly fisheries and maritime business and fishery industry, organic agriculture, husbandry, state defense and security.
