Most of its resource-poor farmers depend on this agrobiodiversity for food security and livelihood. Agrobiodiversity in APO has served as the source of genetic materials that propelled the Green Revolution in the region. It has enabled continuous growth in productivity, allowing agriculture to cope with declining yield, emergence of pests and diseases and occurrence of abiotic stresses like drought and floods.

Demographic data
Gender - Makwe and Guyu have more females in the scheme (60.5% and 55% respectively). Masholomoshe has the highest number of males (53.3%). Discussion with the sampled households revealed that male headed families hardly face labour problems, and high percentages of female irrigators have a negative impact when it comes to operation and maintenance. In terms of gender distribution there are more women irrigating than males.

It is still the main source of foreign exchange earnings (up to 90%) and the largest labour force employer (about 83%). Of the total agricultural output, about 95% was covered by smallholder agriculture sub-sector. However, a number of factors limit smallholder farmers from participating in export potential cash crops. The main objective of this paper is to identify household specific factors determining sesame production and marketing participation.

This paper develops a hydro-economic optimization modeling framework to assess the economic consequences and potential trade-offs of various infrastructure development and policy pathways in the Nam Ngum Basin (Lao PDR). We considered whether large shifts in water resource demands in a relatively water abundant basin could induce meaningful economic trade-offs among water uses, including hydropower generation, irrigation expansion, flood control, and transboundary water transfer objectives.

Informes e investigacionesJulio, 20122011 was the first year of operation of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). CCAFS brings together the work of all 15 international Centres in the CGIAR, and is a joint programme between the CGIAR and the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP). 2011 was a start-up year in terms of introducing a new way of working across Centres, but it was also a year of considerable research effort. Work was initiated in the field at many sites, and baseline surveys were completed in three regions on two continents.
