This is a report of a research project conducted in the Volta region of Ghana on women’s access to land. The authors conclude that women’s land tenure in this area is pervasively insecure. Specific customary norms in the matrilineal society perpetuate this insecurity and demonstrate the lack of implementation of legal measures set up to protect women against property rights discrimination. The authors give recommendations for improving women’s secure access to land, targeting the local community, NGOs and legal aid clinics as well as the government.

Who can access and use the land? The answer to this age-old question is changing fast in many parts of rural Africa. Land that used to be allocated within the community by chiefs is now increasingly changing hands in more diverse ways. The wealthy and well-connected within the community or from further afield are frequently able to override local statutory or customary land rights, dispossessing the previous occupants or forcing them to divide their already small plots of land.

Parkia biglobosa, a NTFP tree species commonly known as "néré" is particularly important in the diet of rural and urban populations in the Sudano-Sahelian zone. The seeds are processed into a highly nutritious sauce, called "soumbala", combined with cereal dishes. While néré is very popular, its occurrence is declining because of various threats hindering its regeneration. In a condition of increasing scarcity of néré and increasing demand, changes in use and access rights, depending on the social status of harvesters, are taking place.
