The Parties shall cooperate in the following areas related to environmental protection: land protection and land tenure, protection of soil, subsoil, forests, water, air, ozone layer and climate, wild flora and wild fauna. The Parties shall cooperate in the following fields: (a) development and adoption of normative legal acts, environmental norms and standards in the field of environmental protection and nature management; (b) keeping of the natural resource register and implementation of environmental monitoring; (c) improvement of the system of public control (supervision) over the state of environment; (d) application of measures for the reproduction of living resources, conservation and restoration biological diversity; (e) development of a network of protected areas, reserves, national parks and other protected natural complexes and minimization of economic and other activities in the areas adjacent to them; and (f) promotion of ecological education.

It has retained closer political and economic ties to Russia than have any of the other former Soviet republics.
