Net farm income for most representative farms in 2008 will be higher than in 1999. However, low profit farms, which consist of 25% of the farms in the study, may have a negative net farm income throughout the forecasting period and may not have financial resiliency to survive. This is true under both optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. All farms except low profit farms may do well under the optimistic scenario, while only high profit farms may be able to survive under the pessimistic scenario. Cropland prices are projected to remain constant.

Markov chain analysis (one-step and long-run) is applied to the National Resources Inventory (NRI) database to evaluate changes in wind-based soil erosion rates over time. The research compares changes in soil erosion rates between NRI sample sites with and without applied conservation practices for a random sample of Great Plains counties. No significant differences between sites are found for half of the counties evaluated. The effectiveness and efficiency of conservation policies are thus questioned in light of these research results.

We examine linkages between national agricultural markets and the pattern of deforestation and agricultural development in an upland watershed. Growth in the watershed has been associated with deforestation as well as increasing evidence of agricultural land quality degradation, soil erosion and diminished watershed function. We ask to what extent forces external to the watershed and the local economy, and in particular market development and associated economic policies, might influence land use and resource management decisions.

Nutrient depletion concerns researchers and policy makers in the Sahel. A village-level programming model determines the size of fertilizer subsidy necessary to encourage farmers to apply the recommended dosage to their millet fields. Results indicate that subsidies would be extremely costly and less than half the expenditures accrue to the farm-household.

This paper examines whether better property rights will increase joint productivity of agricultural and timber products in the Brazilian Amazon. Farrell output-based technical efficiency and technological progress measures are derived by using DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) for Amazonian counties and are regressed on non-discretional variables such as land title. Land title is found to significantly improve the technical efficiency.

Although there is widespread support for the "ideal model" of agricultural production being based around the owner-occupier farmer, it is recognized that, for a variety of reasons, this ideal is neither always attainable nor desirable. There is also a need to ensure that farming becomes competitive when exposed fully to world markets. This means that farmers are likely to require the flexibility to expand their businesses in circumstances where they may not have the capital to purchase the additional assets.

A contingent valuation survey was conducted in two diverse Oregon counties to estimate potential enrollment of framed or grazed land in a riparian buffer strip program. Landowner preferences for various program components were elicited and demonstrate the need to carefully design conservation incentives to encourage participation.
