Adrian Cullis from FAO Ethiopia reflects on the recent conference in Addis Ababa on the future of pastoralism in Africa. The event's fundamental take home message is that "there is a future for pastoralism in Africa." However, it looks like there will be different futures and different forms of pastoralism - with winners and losers. He also outlines the work FAO does in this area, and comments on some issues like gender and productivity issues (of rangelands, of livestock) that received insufficient attention in the meeting.

In early May 2011, people working on the Nile Basin Development Challenge (http://nilebdc.org) met in Addis Ababa in a 'science and reflection workshop'. Session 2 of the workshop examined institutional and other processes that are key to success of the overall program. In this video, Josie Tucker (ODI) reports from small group discussions on ways to support more flexible and participatory implementation of rainwater management and innovation at the local and regional levels.

In this interview, Augustine Ayantunde from ILRI introduced an ILRI-led project on 'integrated management of rainwater in mixed crop-livestock integrated systems' (in the Volta river basin). The project aims to evaluate and test best fit rainwater management strategies in Ghana and Burkina Faso. According to Ayantunde, the approach of the project is not 'business as usual.' Instead of traditional linear research for farmers, the emphasis project is on the participation of local stakeholders and communities through innovation platforms.

Jan de Leeuw from ILRI reflects on the impacts of droughts and hazards on pastoral communities in Africa. He argues that pastoralists are often well-adapted to short term hazards and droughts. A single-season drought weakens livestock and communities. When rains fail repeatedly however, the problems start, and the impacts can be long-lasting. He was talking in the margins of the recent conference in Addis Ababa on the future of pastoralism in Africa. The Addis Ababa conference (21-23 March 2011) was organized by the Future Agricultures Consortium with Tufts University.

One project of the Nile Basin Development Challenge (http://nilebdc.org) aims to match land and water 'practices' and interventions to the needs of specific landscapes. In 2011, we experimented with a game - modeled on the 'happy families' childrens' game - to discuss the challenges involved. In this video, Alan Duncan (ILRI) and other game members explain the results of a game played at the 3rd International Forum on Water and Food in November 2011. The game used a fictional landscape derived from real NBDC sites in Ethiopia.

During the 2011 Third International Forum on Water and Food (in South Africa) Amare Haileselassie from ILRI reflected on ways that livestock can be integrated into rainwater management systems and strategies in Ethiopia. The overall aim is to improve 'livestock water productivity' through the adoption of various practices at farm and landscape levels.
