    Assessing the effectiveness of a protected area network: a case study of Bhutan

    An assessment of management effectiveness was carried out for all the protected areas in the Kingdom of Bhutan. During 2014-2016 the Royal Government of Bhutan developed a custom-made tool for assessing management effectiveness: the Bhutan Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool Plus (Bhutan METT +). This was implemented in Bhutan’s 10 protected areas and one botanical park, and the results were verified through field trips and expert reviews.

    This Second National Environment Action Plan is a nation-wide sectoral document that provides a framework to guide the efforts in ensuring that the Maldives continues to develop in a sustainable manner. The approach taken in the formulation of this NEAP II results in drawing out a number of key issues which need to be addressed and then identifying appropriate responses to them. The aim of this Action Plan is to protect and preserve the environment of the Maldives, and to sustainably manage its resources for the collective benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    The National Environment Management Action Plan (NEMAP) is a national plan with a multi-sectoral approach. The Plan covers the period from 1995 to 2005.     The purpose of this Act is to recognize forest rights to tribal communities who have been occupying the land before the forest laws were put into force.Scheduled Tribes residing in forests shall be entitled to the land currently occupied which may be allocated in all forests including National Parks and Sanctuaries.The Act grants forest rights to Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers including: right to live in the forest land for habitation or for self-cultivation for livelihood; right of ownership, access to collect, use, and dispose of minor forest produce; right to use

    This Act amends the Kerala Forest (Vesting and Management of Ecologically Fragile Lands) Act, 2003 by inserting two new sections 10A and 10B providing for dispute redressal in respect of lands having an extent of not more than two hectares and for the constitution of the Ecologically Fragile Land Claim Dispute Redressal Committee.

    This Act aims at transferring to and vesting in the Government the ownership and possession of all ecologically fragile lands held by any person in order to minimize the degradation of these ecosystems and their biological diversity.The Government shall have the right to declare any land to be ecologically fragile land which shall be deemed to be reserved forests according to the provisions of this Act.The Act provides for the constitution and functions of an Advisory Committee which shall be responsible for identifying ecologically fragile lands which shall then be managed by Forest Depart

    The newly instituted Survey and Demarcation Division shall conduct the survey and definiton of boundaries of the so called reserved Forests of Bhutan and shall widely spread information about the forest areas included under this provision, in order to ascertain eventual claims of rights on forests and their products, land and water courses or grazing and pasture rights. The involved land shall be excluded from the reserved forest areas or expropriated or acquired.
