The purpose of this paper is to outline
an approach for Bank engagement in forests, trees, and
woodlands on farms in Sub-Saharan Africa for the coming five
years. The paper takes the framework of the Africa
development strategy, which has two main pillars: supporting
employment and competitiveness, and building resilience and
reducing vulnerability; and one underlying foundation:
strengthening capacity and governance. It is consistent with

    Tunisie

This report assesses climate risks and
opportunities and proposes actions. It provides a synthesis
of evidence of climate variability and change, impacts, and
uncertainties associated with climate change that may affect
Tunisia s water, land, agriculture, and coastal zones. The
report then provides a detailed analysis of the potential
impacts of climate change on food security and gross
domestic product (GDP) as well as on local populations

Asie, Asie central, Europe, Europe orientale

This volume presents a synthesis of the multi-country collaborative program of analytical and advisory activities titled reducing vulnerability to climate change in European and Central Asian (ECA) agricultural systems. Climate change and its impacts on agricultural systems and rural economies are already evident throughout the ECA region. Adaptation measures now in use in the region-largely piecemeal efforts-would be insufficient to prevent impacts on agricultural production over the coming decades.

    The increasing resilience to climate
change in the agricultural sector report presents
local-level priorities, informed by stakeholder input, to
build agricultural resilience in both countries. The
objectives of this study were threefold: (1) to improve the
understanding of climate change projections and impacts on
rural communities and livelihoods in selected regions of
Jordan and Lebanon, specifically the Jordan River Valley and

    Pakistan

    The vision of Pakistan's social
protection strategy to reach the poor and vulnerable (2007)
is 'to develop an integrated and comprehensive social
protection system, covering all the population, but
especially the poorest and the most vulnerable'.
Consistent with this vision, the goals of the strategy are
identified as: 1) to support chronically poor households and
protect them against destitution, food insecurity,

    This report 'Turning the right
corner - ensuring development through a low carbon transport
sector' emphasizes that developing countries need to
transition to a low carbon transport sector now to avoid
locking themselves into an unsustainable and costly future.
Furthermore, it argues that this transition can be
affordable if countries combine policies to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions with broader sector reforms aimed

    Afrique

This paper sheds light on how to harvest
the "youth dividend" in Sub-Saharan Africa by
creating jobs in agriculture. The agriculture that attracts
the youth will have to be profitable, competitive, and
dynamic. These are the same characteristics needed for
agriculture to deliver growth, to improve food security, and
to preserve a fragile natural environment. With higher
priority accorded to implementation of well-designed public

    Nigéria

This book analyzes the risks to
Nigeria's development prospects that climate change
poses to agriculture, livestock, and water management. These
sectors were chosen because they are central to achieving
the growth, livelihood, and environmental objectives of
Vision 20: 2020; and because they are already vulnerable to
current climate variability. Since other sectors might also
be affected, the findings of this research provide

This sector note presents the results of
the World Bank-led study on the development of a strategy of
the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt to respond to
air quality problems in Greater Cairo. The Greater Cairo
Metropolitan Area (GCMA) is the largest urban and industrial
center in Egypt, which, in 2009, was ranked eighth among the
world's top urban agglomerations. Twenty million people

This report provides estimates of social
and financial costs of environmental damage in India from
three pollution damage categories: (i) urban air pollution,
including particulate matter and lead; (ii) inadequate water
supply, poor sanitation, and hygiene; (iii) indoor air
pollution; and four natural resource damage categories: (a)
