Binnen het huidige voorgestelde beleid op het gebied van ruimtelijke ordening, in de vorm van de Vijfde Nota Ruimtelijke Ordening enhet concept stedelijke netwerken, wordt echter geen aandacht besteed aan hoe vorm zou moeten worden gegeven aan dit gebied.

In de Vijfde Nota Ruimtelijke Ordening staat de militaire luchthaven Valkenburg gepland voor ontwikkeling als stedelijk gebied. Binnen de betreffende gemeentes (Wassenaar, Katwijk, Valkenburg) zijn diverse natuurbeschermingsorganisaties voorstander voor het behoud van de luchthaven.
