The Rangelands Observatory

The International Land Coalition (ILC) believes that a fair and effective monitoring of ongoing conversion and fragmentation of rangeland ecosystems is needed in order to provide a thorough understanding of the trends and their implications – and also to enhance informed and participatory decision making on land use and investments in rangelands, and on the trade-offs involved.

To this aim, a Rangeland Observatory (RO) project has been established.

Opportunities to take part in this project include providing data, hosting research, or being a focal point for a particular rangeland ‘hotspot’ vulnerable to large-scale conversion. Organizations, communities, individuals and administrations interested in taking part in and contributing to this Initiative are encouraged to contact the Rangelands Observatory project at rangelands@landcoalition.info

More specific information in the 2-pages attached introducing to the Rangelands Observatory.

We are planning to organise the launching workshop of the Rangelands Observatory (R.O.) during the week 11-16 February 2013, in collaboration with World Initiative for Sustainable Pastoralism (www.IUCN.org/WISP) , possibly in Nairobi.

The main agenda would include:

1) TERRITORY - Delimitation of the Observatory territories: glossary, regions and initial network and partnerships,

2) PRODUCTS - Presentation of first results of the Observatory (assessment of current context and analysis of existing data)

3 ) RESOURCES - Working Groups debating: a) methodologies for fieldwork activities, b) definition of Guidelines for Grants assignation,  c) establishment of a Communication strategy,

4) OPPORTUNITIES - Brainstorming about the future structuring and functioning of the Rangelands Observatory.

In that respect, we would be happy to receive from your side as soon an introductory, concise paper indicating :

a) the nature and the functioning of your organization,

b) its objectives as well as the activities,

c) what you would like the Observatory to contribute to your actions,

d) any other idea or material that might assist in joining forces.

This would represent the first step of our partnership and collaboration.

Please feel free to circulate this invitation to other organizations / individuals that are concerned about these themes.
