The struggles continue for the communities displaced by the Addax Bioenergy project in Sierra Leone in 2008 and their situation is getting worse as the lands are handed over from one company to the next. There is an urgent need to invest in alternative farming methods for the communities. The land is their most valuable resource;and such investment is crucial to a sustainable livelihood.

Land Use Policy Volume 90
Peer-reviewed publicationJanuary, 2020French Southern and Antarctic Lands, Central African Republic, Southern Africa, South Africa, United KingdomHybrid land tenure administration occurs in a number of South Africa’s state-subsidised housing projects and in the informal settlements from which the housing beneficiaries tend to be drawn. Volume 9 Issue 12
Peer-reviewed publicationDecember, 2020South Africa, Southern AfricaThe sandy croplands in the Free State have been identified as one of the main dust sources in South Africa. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and strength of physical soil crusts on cropland soils in the Free State, to identify the rainfall required to form a stable crust, and to test their impact on dust emissions. Crust strength was measured using a fall cone penetrometer and a torvane, while laboratory rainfall simulations were used to form experimental crusts. Dust emissions were measured with a Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL).

Volume 9 Issue 10
Peer-reviewed publicationOctober, 2020Southern Africa, South Africa, Turks and Caicos IslandsRoughly 90% of farmers in the Western Cape Province of South Africa have converted to no-tillage systems to improve the efficiency of crop production. Implementation of no-tillage restricts the mixing of soil amendments, such as limestone, into soil. Stratification of nutrients and pH is expected. A soil survey was conducted to determine the extent and geographical spread of acid soils and pH stratification throughout the Western Cape. Soil samples (n = 653) were taken at three depths (0–5, 5–15, 15–30 cm) from no-tillage fields.

A Webinar Report
Reports & ResearchNovember, 2020Southern AfricaWhat is the state of land information in South Africa? Is there really a lack of land data to support decisions and to improve land governance? This was the point of departure that a team of specialists grappled with to uncover the many different sources of land data and information available in South Africa. For the very first time, they attempted to systematically review and categorize the entire ecosystem of data and information related to key land topics in the country, assessing over 104 land datasets from 59 different sources.
