Grasslands in South Africa have been extensively transformed and fragmented, but are poorly protected. Commercial afforestation poses a particular threat to grassland biodiversity because areas suitable for forestry coincide with those supporting the greatest richness of endemic and threatened biota. To comply with international forestry standards, commercial timber growers leave “ecological networks” of interconnected open corridors within plantations: however, the value of these networks for conservation is unclear.

Agricultural land use and sugarcane residue management effects on soil bacterial communities at two long-term sites in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa, were investigated by PCR-DGGE. Land uses at site 1 were maize [M]; pre-harvest burnt sugarcane [SC]; permanent kikuyu pasture [KIK]; pine forest [PF]; wattle forest [W] and undisturbed native grassland [NAT], whereas land managements at site 2 were pre-harvest burning of sugarcane [Bto] or green cane harvesting with retention of a trash mulch [T] (with [F] or without [Fo] fertilizer additions).

This study presents four strategies of a novel evolutionary algorithm, multi-objective differential evolution algorithm (MDEA). The four strategies namely, MDEA1, MDEA2, MDEA3 and MDEA4 are adapted to solve the multi-objective crop planning model with multiple constraints in a farmland in the Vaalharts irrigation scheme (VIS) in South Africa. The three objectives of the model are to minimize the total irrigation water (m²) and to maximize both the total net income in South African Rand (ZAR) from farming and the total agricultural output in tons.
