Land use involves a diverse range of perspectives and cannot be resolved by any single stakeholder working alone. A process like Transformative Scenario Planning (TSP) can bring together conflicting opinions and help people to start thinking differently. This report summarises the main steps, processes and ideas involved in the TSP workshops in Botswana. It articulates the process of TSP, how it unfolds in a group setting and how it can be used to draw out questions and concerns.

Peer-reviewed publicationJuly, 2019Botswana, Zambia, Mali, Tanzania, Cameroon, AfricaRecent debates in social anthropology on land acquisitions highlight the need to go further back in history in order to analyse their impacts on local livelihoods. The debate over the commons in economic and ecological anthropology helps us understand some of today’s dynamics by looking at precolonial common property institutions and the way they were transformed by Western colonization to state property and then, later in the age of neoliberalism, to privatization and open access.

This paper reviews various methodologies for forest valuation and describes how they have been used in the preparation of forestry investment projects and programmes. It confirms that many potentially good valuation methodologies exist and it presents summaries of most of the main methodologies used. The document highlights other important considerations that have to be considered in any analysis (e.g. distribution of costs and benefits, different perceptions of value). It also reveals that valuation is not widely used at the moment in forestry project preparation.
