    The Miombo woodland is a vast African dryland forest ecosystem covering close to 2.7 million km2 across southern Africa (Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe). The woodlands are characterized by the dominance of Brachystegia species, either alone or in association with Julbernardia and Isoberlinia species.     In this 2012 edition of Moving Forward, FAO Forestry is pleased to present a selection of the work it undertook in the 2010-2011 biennium for the benefit of the global forestry community. The FAO Forestry Programme encompasses a vast range of activities and projects, of which this booklet presents only a sample.     The First International Workshop on Community Forestry in Africa was held in the Gambia in February 1999. It began the process of bringing together all of the African experiences in community-based natural resource management. Until the Gambia workshop, those looking for documentation of existing initiatives would have looked towards Asia for information about best practices and experience in participatory forest management.
