Does poverty in Egypt have a woman's face? Is female poverty linked to their conditions in the labour market or levels of education? Are women particularly at risk in poor households? This report addresses the gender dimensions of poverty using the recent Household Expenditure, Income and Consumption Survey of 1999/2000 for Egypt. Poverty measures of males and females were found to be significantly different, in both urban and rural areas, where higher levels are observed among females than males.
This is the first issue of the Journal of Law and Rural Development, published by IFAD. IFAD’s mandate to address rural poverty and promote rural development is unique among international organizations. For many years IFAD limited its activities to financing projects and programmes implemented by its Member States, but over the last decade it has begun to transform itself into a knowledge centre and a key participant in the international policy dialogue around rural development issues. The launch of this journal is another step forward in this transformation.
It is no doubt that water resource is considered as main determining factor for agriculture and the adoption of modern irrigation technique would preserve this important resource. The shortage of rain in middle and southern Iraq pushes farmers to depend on irrigated agriculture especially from its main resource Euphrates and Tigris and their tributaries.
يلخص هذا التقرير النتائج التي تم التوصل إليها في موسم 1998 /1999 و المتعلقة بدراسة الجانب الاقتصادي و الاجتماعي من مشروع التنمية المتكاملة للمساقط المائية في محسة. و يهدف المشروع المذكور إلى تطوير الأعمال الدائمة لحصاد و نشر المياه في الظروف القاحلة ليستفاد منها في زيادة كمية الأعلاف و تحسين المناطق الرعوية المتاحة للمواشي و خاصة الأغنام. و قد أنشأت الحكومة السورية في عام 1989، و كجزء من هذا المشروع، مركز بحوث محسة الذي يبعد حوالي 130 كم شمال شرق مدينة دمشق. و يتبع هذا المشروع إلى مديرية الري و استعمالات المياه التابعة لوزارة الزراعة و الاصلاح الزراعي.
This template is related to the study "Identifying Women's needs related to rangeland governance". The purpose of this study is to explore gender roles, relations, constraints and opportunities in livestock production in interdependent agricultural systems of Tunisia, constituting of forest, rangelands and/or agriculture. Overall, there is very little research conducted on gender issues (such as roles, relations, and responsibilities) in agriculture in Tunisia, even less so in rangelands.
In Uganda’s Kabale district, too many people had been trying to make a living from too little land. Because of overpopulation and exhaustion of the soil by intense cultivation, the area had gone into decline. Then, researchers and farmers — supported by the International Development Research Centre — joined forces to revitalize the region.
These messages were developed based on the field experience in fragile and crisis affected contexts of UN-Habitat and the partners of the Global Land Tool Network and the HLP Area of Responsibility of the Global Protection Cluster. They are a quick reference on how to empower women and protect their housing, land and property rights in fragile and crisis affected contexts and why this is an essential element to sustain peace and stability.
A crucial part of the Initiative is the determination of the extent and nature of the land degradation
due to salt damage in Central and Southern Iraq. A range of techniques, including the very latest
Geographic Information Systems are being deployed to achieve this.
