Thirty three male tudanca young bulls were used to evaluate 2 production systems (intensive and semiextensive) and 2 slaughter ages (12 and 14 months). Although there were differences in the average daily gains along the finishing period between groups, no differences were observed in conformation score. In contrast, production system affected fatness score. Semiextensive feed animals slaughtered at 12 months of age presented values of fatness scores lower than other groups (p

By means correlation and simple and multiple regression analysis, in this experiment were studied the correlation coefficients among the objective and subjective variables of the carcass and the relations between the weight of the main carcass cuts and the carcass weight. The carcass weight accounted for 55-93% of the variation of weight de the different carcass cuts.

The use of markers-derived metrics has been suggested to infer relative inbreeding from the homozygosity of markers. Automated genotyping systems yield accurate genotypes of multiple SNPs which are useful markers for this goal. In the present study, 322 pigs of the Torbiscal closed strain of Iberian pigs have been genotyped for 192 selected SNPs, using the GoldenGate Genotyping Assay. The animals proceed from 56 litters born from minimum or maximum coancestry matings.

Among the autochthonous breeds in Spain, the Ripollesa sheep breed is the most common in Catalonia. It is rustic, with a convex profile, white wood of entrefine type and a characteristic pigmentation. Following the recommendations of the FAO, the morphologic characterization of the Ripollesa ewe has been carried out, as well as the analysis of its variability. A quantitative study from twelve zoometric measures and weight was carried out in a total of 224 females.

MESMIS methodology (Ridaura et al., 2002) has been tested to assess sustainability of two different commercial flocks within the breeding scheme of the Latxa sheep in the Basque Country. The evaluation is based on technical, economical, environmental and social indicators derived from a SWOT analysis of the system. The assessment has been made by the comparison of two commercial flocks managed under different environmental conditions by means of specific nutrition and reproduction practices.

A survey that gathered information about farm structure, grazing system, feeding and reproductive management was conducted in 181 farms. Parda de Montaña is the main breed regarding cows (92.4%), heifers (95,3%) and calves (84,1%). Bulls belong to Parda de Montaña (65%) breed but also Limusine, Charolaise and Blonde d'Aquitaine. Farms had an average size of 53.6 cows. Feeding depends largely on grazing in different forage resources, from June to October in high mountain ranges, in spring and autumn in natural meadows and forage crops.

Surveys were conducted to 141 farmers registered in the FERPAM at Asturias (A), Cantabria (C) and Castilla and Leon (CL) regions, with the aim to know animal production system characteristics. Racial diversity was high (57.4% of the cows are "Parda de Montaña" (PM) and the 25.2% are cross with other breeds) and only 24.1% of farms have PM pure-breed animals. The average herd size was 32.1 cows in A, 35.3 in C and 64.6 in CL. The 95% of farms are located in mountain areas. The animals are kept indoors 3.7 months/year, as average. The average age of calves weaning was 5.8 months.

The present work is part of an experimental program aimed to establish the dietary lysine (Lys) requirements of post-weaned Iberian piglets. For this purpose, we used 66 castrated male Iberian piglets of Silvela strain, with approximately 10 kg bodyweight and 40 days of age. Piglets were fed one of six experimental diets differing in their dietary Lys content. L-Lys was added in increasing concentrations (from 55 to 80 g Lys/kg crude protein) to a basal diet containing corn, barley and soybean meal, at the expense of corn starch.

At present the Race Burguete is regarded as Breed in danger of extinction. The products marketed can be classified in Lechal (the colt once weaned enters the fattener) and Quinceno (foals that once weaned remain several months at grazing and around 15 months of age are fattening). The aim of this work is to characterize both systems of production and to obtain data on the behaviour of the race in order to advise farmers belonging to the association. A total of 22 Burguete colts, 12 lechales and 10 quincenos, were slaughtered. Both cases included males and females.

8 flocks of Ojinegra ewes (n=5634) were studied during a productive cycle (2007-2008) in Teruel (Spain), a low-mountain dry and harsh area. Ojinegra ewes belong to a local breed, of small-medium size, reared under a semi-extensive system of management. Throughout three seasons (autumn, winter and spring) weight and BCS of 5634 ewes at lambing and weaning were recorded and 5786 lambs were weighed fortnightly form birth to weaning. Season had a significant (p>0.01) effect on weight and BCS of ewes and on lambs average daily gain.
