    A letter from the Prime Minister dated 16 January 2008, and cited in the Constitution Court Ruling No 15/2552, in defense of the Community Forest Bill shows how “community rights” are often seen as contingent upon the responsibility of the communities to take care of the forest. Interestingly, the strategic rights claiming process and discourse associated with the community forest movement are also based on a similar argument of responsibility to protect the forest.

    This paper describes the interventions undertaken in the Doe Mao Salong watershed in an effort to restore the landscape and improve the livelihoods of local communities. Interventions included forming multi-stakeholder platforms to facilitate dialogue and to ensure participatory land-use planning; the creation of tree nurseries for forest rehabilitation; identifying products for sale in local markets; and a focus on action learning. Land-tenure arrangements proved key to these interventions. The report describes the impacts.

    The aim of this study is to discuss and analyze key factors that affect the desertification in Pa Deng Sub-district, Thailand, in order to assess the desertification risk of the sites. The MEDALUS Model was used to conduct the desertification risk assessment. The spatial analysis study was done with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) programs. The key factors that had an impact on the desertification in Pa Deng area are climatic factor, soil factors (soil texture, fertility and erosion) and human activity factor (land use).

    This report presents the key findings on forest land use and land-use change between 1990 and 2005 from FAO’s 2010 Global Forest Resources Assessment Remote Sensing Survey. It is the first report of its kind to present systematic estimates of global forest land use and change. The ambitious goal of the Remote Sensing Survey was to use remote sensing data to obtain globally consistent estimates of forest area and changes in tree cover and forest land use between 1990 and 2005.

    Based on a broad literature review, this publication discusses rural women’s time poverty in agriculture, elaborates on its possible causes and implications and provides insight into the various types of constraints that affect the adoption of solutions for reducing work burden. This paper raises questions about the adequacy of women’s access to technologies, services and infrastructure and about the control women have over their time, given their major contributions to agriculture.
