    Although world food and agricultural production, based on current trends, should be sufficient to meet demand in the decades ahead, the world still faces a serious food crisis that is as dangerous and life-threatening for millions of poor people today as in the past. The main objective of this article is to illuminate the world food situation and to make a critical analysis of the root causes of world food insecurity by identifying the various misconceptions surrounding our understanding of hunger, starvation and poverty.

    Om het effect van de ruilverkavelingswerken op de grondwaterstand in het Land van Cuijk te bepalen zijn de bestaande grondwatertrappen geactualiseerd. Hiertoe is het gebied naar grondwatertrap, grondsoort en te verwachten effect van de ingrepen onderverdeeld in 26 homogene gebieden (strata). Met een gestratificeerde tweefasesteekproef en regressieschatters is van elk stratum de gemiddelde waarde geschat van de gemiddeld hoogste (GHG) en de gemiddeld laagste grondwaterstand (GLG).

    The technological and institutional requirements needed for a broader distribution and adoption of new cropping technologies are indicated, using as example the case of changes in land use by soybean growers of the Brazilian Cerrados. In Brazil, soybean had contributed significantly to economic development, accounting for 8 percent of total exports. The current survey was conducted on a red-yellow Latosol in southeastern Minas Gerais. In 1986, 72 percent of this area was under annual crops and 11 percent under pastures.

    During the last 25 years, African policymakers have been bombarded with often conflicting advice on agricultural development strategy from an increasing array of international development agencies. In this brief, Christopher Delgado gives a chronology of agricultural paradigms for Africa. He points out that agricultural development paradigms have gone back and forth between defining agriculture as the engine for growth through cash and export cropping, and emphasizing food production, import substitution, and food self-sufficiency. .
