A review of policies and interventions effecting pastoralists in Tanzania, including consequences on livelihoods, social relations and access to resources including land.
Since early 1990’s Tanzania has implemented far reaching macroeconomic and structural reforms which has led to substantial socio-economic development. GDP growth per annum has almost doubled over the last decade from 4.1% in 1998 to 7.4% in 2008, with an average growth of 7% per annum. This is historically high for Tanzania and comparable to the performance of fastest growing economies in sub-Saharan Africa. GDP growth peaked in 2004 at 7.8%, but severe and prolonged drought during 2005/06 negatively affected the economy, and the GDP has been gradually recovering to reach 7.4% in 2008.
Sustainable agricultural development is a necessity for sustainable economic growth and social development in Africa. Sustainable agriculture largely depends on how effective natural and environmental resources are managed and utilized; it also depends on the security of continuous access to such resources. This research was aimed to look into trends in agricultural productivity, examine the persistence of the environmental insecurity, analyze the relationship between the two, and explore their links to the national development policies.
To highlight and examine apparent paradoxes in assessing the effectiveness of different forms of land-use for biodiversity conservation. Tanzania. We compare and contrast the findings of two recent and seemingly conflicting studies on the effectiveness of conservation protection strategies in Tanzania. We evaluate these studies in the context of a wider body of evidence relating to the problem of determining protected area performance.
Includes trends prospects and policies, biofuel production and land access in Tanzania – laws, policies and procedures, impacts of biofuel investments on land access. Findings and implications cover production models and their impacts on local land access; risks of land alienation – long term impacts; limitations of compensation; use of third-party mediators?; large-scale transfers of land for biofuels are most problematic; linking policy with practice; shortcomings of biofuel guidelines; alternative land holding structures and production models.
Women and childrens' insecure rights to property and inheritance in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa is not a new issue. The extended family support systems that used to function as social safety nets for widows and orphaned children have weakened as a consequence of societal changes such as economic development, migration and urbanization. This situation has clearly been exacerbated by the AIDS epidemic. Though prevalence is starting to level off, or even decline, in several high prevalence countries, this comes after years of increasing prevalence.
