Latin America and the Caribbean
Este artículo divulga los resultados de una serie de seminarios interdisciplinares y multisectoriales de investigación que se enfocaron en los problemas actuales de una región en rápido crecimiento urbano. Se recogió información cualitativa sobre varias de las mayores economías de América Latina, se hicieron mesas redondas y talleres que incluían profesionales en ejercicio y funcionarios estatales. Los autores agruparon estas discusiones por temas y los enmarcaron en debates académicos contemporáneos.

The present study aimed to optimize the location of wood storage yards in forest management for the production of wood in the Brazilian Amazon. The area of forest management studied was 638.17 ha, with 1478 trees selected for harvest with a diameter at breast height of at least 50 cm in accordance with Brazilian legislation. Taking the topography into account-permanent preservation areas, restricted areas, and remaining trees-and using GIS tools, 7896 sites were identified that could be used as wood storage yards.

The Iberá wetlands, located in La Plata Basin, is a fragile ecosystem habitat of several species of flora and fauna and it also constitutes one of the largest inland freshwater of the world. In this study the hydroclimatologic response to projected climatic changes in the Iberá wetlands is assessed. Bias corrected temperature and precipitation data from four Regional Climate Models (RCMs) developed for the CLARIS-LPB project were used to drive the calibrated Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrological model for different time slices.

We focus on Shannon Entropy (SE) for the characterization of polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) images. This approach analyzes the information contribution made by individual pixels to the whole image for assessment of land degradation in the information content of ALOS PALSAR images. Additionally, the performance of other polarization parameters, and polarization decomposition is illustrated and discussed.

This paper analyses the climate change in La Plata Basin, one of the most important regions in South America due to its economy and population. For this work it has been used the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI) and the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) atmospheric global model. For both near and far future, the projected changes for temperature over the entire basin were positive, although they were only statistically significant at the end of the XXI century. Changes in the annual cycle of mean temperature were also positive in all subregions of the basin.

The Paraná delta, growing at a rate of c. 2 km2 yr-1 since 6,000 yrs, is one of the most complete record of late Holocene in southern South America. The evolution of this 17,400 km2 delta enclosed in Plata estuary, can be tracked by a series of 343 successive coastal-ridge showing a c.11 years period, in coincidence with sunspot cycle, also found in some North Hemisphere coastal-ridge successions.

Se evalúa la distribución espacial de los valores medios estacionales, la variabilidad interanual y el ciclo anual de la precipitación y la temperatura, así como la variabilidad interna.

This paper analyses the climate change projected for the near and distant future in South America using MRI/JMA (Japanese Meteorological Agency) global model simulations with resolutions of 20 and 60 km. Changes in mean climate, as well as in the annual cycles and interannual variability of temperature and precipitation are discussed. An analysis is also made of the uncertainties of the 60 km resolution model experiments. For the near and distant future, both, the 20 km and 60 km resolution MRI/JMA models project that temperature changes will be positive in all seasons.

Based on research into the evolution of land tenure regimes and their implications for the sustainability of pastoral production systems, this document provides public policy recommendations to help sustainable development of pastoralist societies. Evidence shows that collective land regimes create the conditions for the development of sustainable production systems while individual land tenure regimes are unable to create these conditions, endangering the sustainability of pastoralism and rangelands.

This paper analyses the drought risk in argentine Pampean region using statistical results of soil water storage. These are calculated by daily soil water balance whose methodology has been tested using values obtained in situ. The goal of the paper is define a level of drought or minimum level of soil water storage, for the entire region which is, at the same time, the minimum optimum soil water content for crops. Over this moisture level, crops can yield with all their potential. The occurrence probability of values, for a determined time period, under that minimum is proposed.
