Access to dynamic markets for small commercial farmers

the case of potato production in the Peruvian Andes

The purpose of this study is twofold. On one hand, the objective is to assess the impact of new and more complex contracting schemes, as opposed to traditional marketing channels, on small farmers’ welfare. On the other hand, the study explores which may be the critical factors that determine the small farmers’ participation in these institutional arrangements. In this context, two critical factors are stressed. The first one has to do with access to credit and the second one is the size of the agricultural plot.

To address the needs of individual regions, such as LAC, more detailed regional and sub regional strategies are needed to ensure that forestry contributes fully to the challenges of poverty, inequity, environmental degradation and sustainable development. This report presents such a strategy for four Andean Countries of South America, that is, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Venezuela could not be included because of time constraints, and the difficulties of obtaining a suitable consultant to carry out the field work.

At this point – just under half way (two years and six months) in the implementation of the first CPWF phase (and three years and eight months since inception began) governance and management processes are running smoothly, it is in reasonable financial health and technical processes – such as issuing new calls and obtaining reviews by our Expert Panel on Scientific Quality – are familiar, although they must be adjusted to each specific instance.

This research was part of a tri-national project intended to determine the main factors constraining or favoring the adoption of sustinable forest management practices in the Brazilian, Bolivian and Peruvian Amazon. The paper describes the logging practices followed by timber extractors in Peru's Amazon lowland under the conditions of the old forest law, revealing differences among types of extractors. It also identifies the main constraints inhibiting the application of management practices prescribed by the new forestry regime.

Este artículo se centra en la ocupación y apropiación de tierras en una región del sudeste de la provincia de Buenos Aires, que integraba en las primeras décadas del siglo XIX el llamado "nuevo sur": los partidos de Arenales y Ayacucho, entre 1823 y 1860. Comenzaremos por caracterizar el traspaso de estos territorios a particulares, el impacto de las distintas modalidades de transferencia y la evolución de la estructura de tenencia. Esto nos llevará a interrogarnos por los protagonistas de este proceso: ¿quiénes fueron los beneficiarios de este reparto?
