Bioenergy sits at the intersection of three of the world’s great challenges - energy security, climate change, and poverty reduction - and has received an enormous amount of attention in the past few years. Joint work on these issues is vital considering that together, the G8 +5 Countries account for about 55 percent of the world’s population, 70+ percent of global GDP, and about 72 percent of world energy-related and industry CO2 emissions (excluding deforestation). Bioenergy statistics are inadequate and not up to date.

Laos depends heavily on rice based agriculture systems and there is evidence that the traditional diversified diet and income base is being eroded, resulting in a negative effect on the livelihoods of the people. The opportunity to gather food in forests is diminishing and dietary diversity is being narrowed.

Following the widespread wreckage and loss of life caused by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004, unprecedented efforts where made to restore order and rebuild the lives and livelihoods of the millions affected. A proportion of the reconstruction and rehabilitation effort was focused on environmental rehabilitation and a part of this again on the rehabilitation of coastal trees and forests. Many programmes were implemented during the post-tsunami period to restore coastal trees and forests, and in particular mangrove forests.

Water table fluctuations and renewal rates based on ³H and ¹⁴C concentrations in bores screened within 5 m of the water table were used to estimate recharge rates in five dryland salinity areas in northern Victoria, Australia. Given the resolution of each technique both methods yield broadly similar results of 4-90 mm/yr (up to 14% of modern rainfall) that reflect the recharge rates following land clearing over the last 200 years. Deeper bores show mixing of modern recharge with older water flowing laterally through the aquifers.

The spread of industrial civilizations has been particularly traumatic for the last remaining hunter-gatherer societies. Manifestations of this include expatriation from ancestral lands, sickness, poverty, and environmental degradation. Northern Australia has been no exception despite remaining a stronghold of Aboriginal cultures and still containing vast areas of relatively intact landscapes. Most Aboriginal people reside in remote settlements where they remain on the negative extreme of basic indicators such as life expectancy and educational attainment.

Australia is a significant player in world trade for several commodities and agriculture is a vital part of the Australian economy.Around 60% of Australia is devoted to agriculture, with three broad zones in which agricultural activity occurs. These are referred to as the pastoral, wheat–sheep, and high rainfall zones. Australia had only about 130,000 commercial farms in 2005, so average farm size is high.Australia's agriculture is market driven and export-oriented.

Dry land salinisation is a significant cause of land and water degradation in Australia.Changing land use from annual to perennial crops has been widely proposed as ameans to reduce land degradation and increase the productivity of saline land. However, in many areas annual crops are financially more attractive than perennialcrops. Increases in perennial crops might also reduce local stream flows with adverseeffects on in-stream values. As such salinity control is likely to involve significanttradeoffs between public and private costs and benefits.
