The USAID's Investor Survey on Land Rights aimed to provide a more systematic understanding of the drivers of tenure risk to land-based investments from the perspective of the private sector, and of how investors and operators assess, mitigate and are affected by such risks. The findings from the survey will provide readers with useful insights into the current treatment of land tenure risks in land-based investments.

An article highlighting a recent event to celebrate the project’s accomplishments and the work of the Tajik government in advancing land reform was featured in local media and a Feed the Future press release. Feed the Future is the U.S. Government’s global hunger and food security initiative.

    South Africa

Writing at the Council on Foreign Relations’ “Africa in Transition” blog, John Campbell notes that South Africa’s land “issue” is not so simple. How true. Back in 1994 the ANC pledged to transfer ownership and control of 30% of white-owned farmlands to black South Africans by 2014. The process, based on a “willing buyer/willing seller” model has been halting at best and too often communities and farmers that did benefit from a redistribution of land lacked the background or capital to develop sustainable commercial entities.

By Dr. Gregory Myers, USAID Division Chief, Land Tenure and Property Rights On July 30, I had the pleasure of joining Landesa President Tim Hanstad at Global Washington in Seattle for a rich discussion of the Global Farms Race: Implications of Food Security, Poverty, and Foreign Investment. At the heart of this conversation are the rights of communities and individuals to decide for themselves how to use and profit from land. Do they possess clear and documented land and resource rights? Who has the power to make decisions?

By Dr. Gregory Myers, USAID Division Chief, Land Tenure and Property Rights.
Last week, I visited Haiti to assess the land tenure and property rights situation there—four years after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed between 100,000 and 300,000 people and displaced another 1.5 million. Many Haitians continue to live in extreme poverty and much needs to be done to address the weak property rights system that slows economic growth and hinders infrastructure rebuilding efforts.
