    Presents findings and proposals of a team which studied the pastoral zone of Niger to forumlate a development programme, describing the existing production systems and constraints related to range resources, nutrition, water points and diseases.

    The paper is divided into four chapters. The frist chapter is the introduction. Chapter two discusses the conceptualisation of the farming system with reference to the livestock component and reviews some alternative typologies that have been employed or proposed. A typological framework that is consistent with ILCA's objectives is then outlined. Chapter 3 develops a regionalisation of the semi arid zones of sub-Saharan Africa in four orders of increasing scale. The first order sub-division is between "West and North" and "East and South" geographical regions.

    This video was planned, filmed and edited by a group of twelve farmers from three kebeles in Fogera woreda in Amhara region of Ethiopia. Gareth Benest from InsightShare, and Beth Cullen and Aberra Adie from ILRI, facilitated the participatory video training which took place between the 12th and 24th February 2012. The aim of the video was to bring local issues to the attention of planners and implementers of rainwater management interventions in Ethiopia.
