    An ex post economic assessment of planted forages in West Africa

    This study assesses, in an indicative way, the impact of fodder banks and forage legume technology in countries of West Africa. The economic surplus method is used to estimate the social rate of return to public investment in research on fodder banks and the distribution of that return amongst producers and consumers. Subsequent sections of this report describe the technology of fodder banks, the economic surplus method, sources of data and the results of the analyses.

    This digital story was produced to communicate the key messages resulting from the Nile Basin Development Challenge (NBDC). The Nile BDC aimed to improve the livelihoods of farmers in the Ethiopian highlands through land and water management and was funded by the Challenge Program for Water and Food. The eight key messages constitute a 'new integrated watershed rainwater management paradigm' and are based on the outputs and outcomes of trans-disciplinary scientific research for development.     Analysis of water delivery performance of smallholder irrigation schemes in Ethiopia: Diversity and lessons across schemes, typologies and reaches

    Irrigation systems consist of three interdependent components involving: the irrigation scheme, the on-farm management and the organizations. The irrigation scheme refers to the infrastructure for water acquisition and distribution (water delivery). This study focused on water delivery performance of 10 smallholders irrigation schemes in four regions of Ethiopia, representing diverse water sources, distribution systems, command areas (50–6000 ha) and number of beneficiary farmers (233–500 farm households) and across agro-ecologies as represented by elevation ranges (1500–2725 masl).
