Bioenergy sits at the intersection of three of the world’s great challenges - energy security, climate change, and poverty reduction - and has received an enormous amount of attention in the past few years. Joint work on these issues is vital considering that together, the G8 +5 Countries account for about 55 percent of the world’s population, 70+ percent of global GDP, and about 72 percent of world energy-related and industry CO2 emissions (excluding deforestation). Bioenergy statistics are inadequate and not up to date.
The IPTRID programme is a multi-donor trust fund managed by the IPTRID Secretariat as a Special Programme of FAO. The Secretariat is located in the Land and Water Development Division of FAO and draws on a worldwide network of leading centres of excellence in the field of irrigation, drainage and water resources management. IPTRID aims to support capacity development for sustainable agricultural water management to reduce poverty, enhance food security and improve livelihoods, while conserving the environment.

There is a urgent need for a better understanding of the risks of soil degradation and their geographical distribution as well as a better knowledge of where degradation occurs at present. it would be desirable to combine soil conservation activities with other elements for increasing crop production.Erosion, salinity and alkalinity and the loss of soil fertility seriously reduce the natural potential of soils to produce food fibres. During the meeting, many criteria to assess the various types of soil degradation were outlined by the experts.
Keeping its tradition of exploring major emerging issues, <i>Nature & Faune</i> has chosen to dedicate this edition to looking at the implications of rapid urbanization and its implications for urban food and nutrition security, focusing on the specific roles of sustainable management and utilization of natural resources in Africa‘s fast changing urban food and nutrition equation.

Il y a neuf mois à peine, la FAO, le GIEC, l’IUFRO et le CIFOR ont convenu de la première Rencontre d’experts sur l’harmonisation des définitions sur les forêts à l’usage des différentes parties prenantes. Pour commencer, son objectif était d’harmoniser les définitions sur les forêts en ne prenant pas seulement en considération les questions de changement climatique et d’évaluation des ressources forestières, mais aussi celles de conservation de la biodiversité et d’aménagement des forêts.
Ces directives sont le premier instrument détaillé, à l’échelle mondiale, relatif aux régimes fonciers et à leur administration, préparé à travers des négociations intergouvernementales. Ces directives exposent des principes et normes internationalement reconnus en vue de l’instauration de pratiques responsables pour l’utilisation et le contrôle des terres, des pêches et des forêts.
This paper reviews various methodologies for forest valuation and describes how they have been used in the preparation of forestry investment projects and programmes. It confirms that many potentially good valuation methodologies exist and it presents summaries of most of the main methodologies used. The document highlights other important considerations that have to be considered in any analysis (e.g. distribution of costs and benefits, different perceptions of value). It also reveals that valuation is not widely used at the moment in forestry project preparation.
