The Eastern Africa Land Administration Network (EALAN) plays an important role in development and support of Land Administration education in Eastern Africa.  The Network was formed in 2009, out of interest and informal agreement by four universities in Eastern African Universities to support each other in offering Land Administration related programs. The interest to network was motivated by lack of qualified land administration lecturers across the eastern African countries.

In the framework of collaboration for country based case studies on land and natural resource tenure security in Eastern and Southern Africa by the University of Nairobi/ Centre for Urban Research and Innovation, a case study was conducted in Burundi. Data collection was based mainly on literature review of legal texts and all studies realized in the area of land tenure and natural resources in Burundi, and field visits. This paper presents only the synthesis of the information and data collected on land, water, mines and forests.

Report based on fieldwork in Chisumbanje seeks to understand: 1) the interest and role of the Zimbabwe Government and its contribution to the first large-scale private investments undertaken by GreenFuel in Chisumbanje; 2) the impact of the project on local communities’ land rights and livelihoods; 3) the role of the local institutions in facilitating and mediating investment, particularly on land; 4) the capacity of local and national institutions to structure a land agreement palatable to the local communities; and 5) the role of GreenFuel as the land user.

Determinants and Implications of Foreign Land Deals in Ugandan Communities

Some of the factors that have been attributed to the global increase of Foreign Land Deals-FLDs include the three F's (food, fuel and finance) crises, and among others. However, most of the empirical evidences stem from the assessment of a broad set of countries. An analysis on the main determinants across host communities within a country presents specificity and closer reality. This study contributes by examining the community factors that could exert significant influence on determining whether or not a community receives FLDs in East African Community (EAC), focusing on Uganda.

Security of land tenure and property rights has received much attention in recent years. While appetite for land reform initiatives is not new, investment is increasing steadily, as evidence emerges that secure tenure is key to achieving economic growth, food security and other development goals.

From the mid-1980s, growing populations have put pressure on land and other natural resources, which has resulted in increased poverty levels, land conflicts and concerns for global food security.
