Climate security in the Central American Dry Corridor

december, 2020
Fiji

The evidence on conflicts around the world since the turn of the century points to a simple conclusion: conflicts, grievances and insecurities are increasingly being affected by changing climates, environmental degradation, food insecurity, and the struggle to control a finite pool of natural resources. This paper aims to understand the linkages between climate, conflict, agriculture, and

Future carbon emissions from global mangrove forest loss

december, 2020
Global

Mangroves have among the highest carbon densities of any tropical forest. These ‘blue carbon’ ecosystems can store large amounts of carbon for long periods, and their protection reduces greenhouse gas emissions and supports climate change mitigation. Incorporating mangroves into Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement and their valuation on carbon markets requires predicting how the management of different land‐uses can prevent future greenhouse gas emissions and increase CO2 sequestration.

A livestock information system roadmap for Ethiopia

december, 2020
Ethiopia

Agriculture is one of the pillars of the Ethiopian economy and the overall economic growth of the country is highly dependent on the success of the agricultural sector. Livestock is an integral part of the agricultural sector and the contribution of live animals and their products to the agricultural economy is immense. Livestock production plays a substantial role in Ethiopia through the provision of food, income, employment and many other contributions.

GESI bundle: Climate-Smart Agriculture for Sustainable Economic Participation & Inclusion & Livelihood (CSA-SEPAL Project)

december, 2020
Global

The main goal of the proposed project is to increase food and economic household security among Female Living with HIV (PLHIV), Women-led households, Gender-based Violence Survivors, and Young Women. The project proposal will empower 100 beneficiaries (10 cooperative groups of 10 members per group) in central province to engage in profitable and sustainable soya beans and groundnuts farming using good agronomic farming practices, enhanced utilization of climate information services and adoption of climate resilient seed varieties.

Report on data ecosystem mapping: Mapping of agricultural data and data holding institutions

december, 2020
Netherlands

There is a need to overcome systemic bottlenecks to facilitate agri-data management, access, and sharing. Among the possible measures recommended by various studies is the development and establishment of national ag- data hub. Understanding the gaps, needs, constraints, and priorities of partners is essential to co-define contextualized interventions that are timely and useful. One of the key activities is thus be to engage with partners in order to consult them on data and infrastructure needs and requirements in order to facilitate co-creation.

Payments for conservation of animal genetic resources in agriculture: One size fits all?

december, 2020
Global

Maintaining minimum population sizes for local livestock breeds is a key goal in the conservation of animal genetic resources. As markets and livestock production systems have tended to favour a narrow base of high-output improved breeds, countries have had to use financial and other incentives to motivate breeders to keep local breeds. This paper explores the potential for more cost-effective alternatives to the most commonly used financial incentive, a fixed payment per animal or livestock unit.

Identification of suitable sustainable agricultural intensification options for the Central Rift Valley, Ethiopia: Developing a multidisciplinary methodology for the Meki sub-basin

december, 2020
Ethiopia

Ethiopia has ambitious plans of expanding irrigation throughout the country to feed the growing population (FDRE 2011; NPC 2016). Due to population growth, landscapes in Ethiopia are facing increasing pressure from agriculture (e.g., Desta et al. 2020). The promotion of irrigation using shallow groundwater (Gowing et al. 2020; Tilahun et al. 2020) and better water lifting mechanisms (Gebregziabher 2012, 2019; Loulseged et al.

Anticipatory climate governance in Southeast Asia

december, 2020
Netherlands

This report presents the RE-IMAGINE research in one of its four regions: Southeast Asia. RE-IMAGINE builds on climate foresight expertise of the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) Program and analyses the role of foresight in climate governance across the globe. Anticipating the possible impacts of climate change has become a key global focus. Scenarios and many other methods and tools are used today to imagine climate futures and develop strategies for realizing new futures while governing climate change.

december, 2020
Sri Lanka

The CGIAR is the leading global agriculture research institution working towards creating sustainable agricultural practices a reality through research and innovation. The CGIAR 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy states that the “CGIAR will contribute to collective global targets for transformation of food, land, and water systems across local, regional, and global levels.

Crop development with data-driven approach towards sustainable agriculture: Lifting the achievements and opportunities of collaborative research between CIAT and Japan

december, 2020
Japan

International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) has a long history of collaboration with Japanese institutions to develop improved crop varieties and adopt agricultural technologies with pioneering approaches for farmers’ benefit. Since 1972, Japan has enjoyed a long history of successful cooperation with the CGIAR (formerly the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research) after becoming its 22nd Member to meet global challenges such as climate change affecting agriculture
