Is a forest with 1 000 species better, and managed better, than a forest with 500 species? This issue of Unasylva looks at issues related to forest biological diversity and its conservation and sustainable use. One of the key messages is that numbers are not the only issue.
The South African forest sector makes a meaningful contribution to the economy of the country and has huge potential in the development of our impoverished rural areas. In South Africa, rural development poses an enormous challenge, a challenge that has not been successfully met by a great number of other developing countries.
Ce manuel de terrain contient les définitions et les procédés utilisés pour planifier et réaliser un inventaire national des ressources forestières, suivant l’approche développée par le Département des forêts de la FAO dans le cadre du programme d’Évaluation des ressources forestières (FRA). La méthodologie repose sur un échantillonnage du pays et utilise des placettes permanentes de terrain. L’approche a été testée et mise en œuvre dans plusieurs pays depuis 2000 (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Philippines, Cameroun et Liban).
This publication contains the articles distributed for the subscribers to the first electronic conference on mulberry for animal production, held bewteen May and August 2000. The conference was organized by the FAO Animal Production and Health Division in response to the growing interest in the cultivation and use of mulberry to feed various domestic animals. The contributions covered a variety of topics including germplasm resources in various countries, agronomic aspects, chemical composition, nutritive value and animal performance.

This report contains the proceedings of the first stakeholders meeting held by the Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands (LADA) project, which aims to develop and validate quantitative reproducible assessment methods to make them widely available and to demonstrate and build capacity for their application in teh dryland areas of the world.
This report identifies FAO’s activities concerning access to natural resources (ANR), and identifies other organizations that use explicitly or implicitly a sustainable livelihoods approach in relation to ANR. The report constitutes Output 2.1 of the work plan of the FAO LSP Sub-programme 3.1 ("Building Stakeholder capacity to improve access to natural resources for the rural poor").
