El acceso a la tierra es indispensable para producir alimentos y crear ingresos. Es también una ventaja social y económica determinante que da acceso a la identidad cultural, al poder político y a la toma de decisiones.

La feminización de la tierra —el acceso de las mujeres a la tenencia— es un fenómeno que viene impactando de forma importante en el ámbito rural; en diferentes niveles, el aumento del interés femenino a acceder a los medios de producción rural ha dado muestras positivas de la capacidad y el liderazgo que el acceso a la tierra representa para ellas.

This report on Brazil forms part of a study of law and land tenure in four Latin American countries. The study also includes a much broader regional overview covering land tenure throughout Latin America. A number of common and broad themes emerge from these studies, applicable in different degrees within the specific country contexts.

Recent research in southeastern Sierra Leone and northwestern Liberia suggests the rural context is of greater significance. The fighting was mainly in rural areas, involved mainly rural youth, and adapted itself to their local concerns.

This paper considers possible answers to these difficult questions by focusing on two issues: the evolution of legal norms in response to both endogenous and exogenous changes, and the role that African customary law and indigenous dispute resolution has played in promoting coordination and cooperation among group members, thereby reducing violent conflict.
