This report is the results of the mid-term review for the EU-IFAD project "Restoration of degraded land for food security and poverty reduction in East Africa and the Sahel: taking successes in land restoration to scale" Project.

Changes in climate that intensify drought and accelerate the spread of livestock parasites and diseases darken the economic future for sub-Saharan pastoralists. Already stressed, as industrial and urban development narrow their access to pastures and water for their animals, many pastoralists face a bleak choice: abandon their livestock and their cultural heritage or die.

Index-based livestock insurance (IBLI) is a donor-funded programme aimed at designing, developing and implementing market-mediated, index-based insurance products to protect livestock keepers, particularly in the drought-prone arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), from drought-related asset losses.

Send a Cow (SAC) is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) that has been working in Kenya since 1996. It focuses on groups of smallholder farmers, providing them with training in sustainable agriculture and improved animal management. SAC is mostly active in western Kenya, one of the country's most populated and poorest region.

In January 2018, the Rangelands Association of Kenya and ILRI partnered to host the Rangeland Communities Exchange Conference. ILRI’s support to the conference was undertaken through the 'Restoration of degraded land for food security and poverty reduction in East Africa and the Sahel: Taking successes in land restoration to scale' project.

To support improved rangeland resource management and monitoring for nomadic pastoralists in northern Kenya, we used a task-based mobile application to incentivize pastoralists provide more than 100,000 surveys containing information on local rangeland, water and livestock resources.

Drylands cover over 40% of the earth's surface and support over 2 billion people, globally (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005). In East Africa alone, over 250 million people depend on drylands for their livelihoods (De Leeuw et al., 2014) and in Kenya, 70% of the total land area is classified as arid- and semi-arid (Batjes, 2004).
